Water Testing Services

Due to the continued heavy workload in county land use permitting and staffing challenges, we will continue our winter water collection and testing schedule until further notice. Water tests will only be collected on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, and water tests brought into the county will only be accepted on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the months as well. We thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and we look forward to working with you in the future.

Aitkin County Environmental Services does water testing for residents to screen for bacteria and nitrates. The following fees apply:

  • Bacteria Water Analysis:  $25
  • Nitrate Water Analysis:  $25
  • Both Bacteria and Nitrate:  $40
  • Water Collection by County Employee: $50

Water tests will be collected and processed every Tuesday from 8 am - 3 pm during the months of April - August. During the months of September - March water tests will be collected and processed every 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 8 am - 3pm. Since the Minnesota Department of Health has taken over License jurisdiction for Lodging and Food Licenses, Aitkin County would like to note that for Vacation Rentals water tests need to be completed by an Minnesota Department of Health Accredited Laboratory.

To have a sample tested, stop by the Environmental Services Department at the courthouse to pick up a sample kit. Click here to request a sampling kit be mailed to you (email). Once you have the kit, follow collection instructions carefully. Click here for "Instructions for Collecting a Water Sample".

If you would like to schedule a water collection by a county employee for a $50 collection fee, please complete the application by the following link (The water collection request application is located in Section 4 at the bottom right of screen): https://pzpermit.co.aitkin.mn.us/index.php

The Minnesota Department of Health recommends that well water be tested once a year for bacterial safety and once every year or two for nitrate. Always test the water for nitrate before giving it to an infant.
