Newborn Home Visiting
Public Health Nurses provide newborn home visits to every family in Aitkin County with their first newborn to help parents monitor for infant development and safety and to educate and inform the parents about parenting, family planning and healthy expectations after a baby. Eligible moms may receive visits before birth, to promote healthy behaviors during and after pregnancy and to assist in preparation for labor and delivery, so that every pregnancy may result in a healthy, full-term infant. Families and infants that qualify and needing more follow up may be allowed more visits.
Purpose: to assess, monitor and provide anticipatory guidance for health, development and safety to a family and its children.
Topics covered: growth, development, nutrition, family planning, family dynamics, support systems, relationships, finances, postpartum emotions/depression, child passenger safety, oral care, anticipatory guidance, discipline and bonding.
Primary interventions include measurement of height, weight and head circumference and administration of the Brigance screening tool. Handouts/brochures and a gift bag with health/development/safety related items are given.
